The one room schoolhouse located at 5064 Jaycox Rd is open the last Sunday of each month seasonally May through October from 2-5pm.

The schoolhouse was built in 1859 and is one of the original ten district schools in town, being used for grades 1-8 from 1859 to 1924. It was once known as the Snow Road School (after the former name of Jaycox Rd.) and served as the Joint Sub-District No. 9 school- serving a district shared with Avon Township.

In 1989 the frame building and its property was deeded to the Historical Society by the Sullivan Family, a local family that had used it as farm storage for many years.  The building and property required a great deal of renovation, cleanup and new materials.  We were fortunate to be able to talk with the last teacher at the school, as well as several former students, who gave us invaluable insight as to how the school originally looked and operated.  Generous help from local groups and individuals helped us to restore the school to its original appearance over the course of 14 years.

Old school desks from various periods, a few authentic schoolbooks from the era, a teacher’s desk and the original blackboard await visitors.  Two outhouses (one salvaged  from the former Shawville railroad station on Route 83) add to the site’s authenticity.

We are quite proud to be able to share this treasure with the public!
